Arizona- Flash flooding in Arizona caused 9 fatalities Saturday, July 15th. The 3 P.M. flood at the Cold Springs swimming hole near Payson, Arizona brought a tragic end to a family birthday celebration. As of Sunday there were still two people missing.
Three of those pronounced dead were recovered on Saturday while the other six were located on Sunday. Four people were treated for hypothermia on Saturday.
The flooding was the result of a nearby thunderstorm in an area previously damaged by a wildfire about 8 miles away. The water rushed the canyon at speeds of 45 mph, leaving the swimmers with little to no time to react.
The area can be especially dangerous during monsoon season. Other areas of the country are experiencing similar flooding including Illinois and Pennsylvania.
