HARDEEVILLE, SC – A Beaufort woman is charged in connection with the vehicle that was left on Hardeeville railway crossing on Church Road that was struck by a southbound Amtrak train early Sunday morning.
According to a news release from the City of Hardeeville, the woman in her early 20s will face misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and violation of a beginner’s permit. The release also states that the car was trying to make a U-turn when it got stuck on the tracks. The driver and passenger were able to get out before the train hit.
When the train struck the car, it split the vehicle in half and a fire broke out. A passenger on the train was hospitalized after an asthma attack, potentially caused by the fumes. No injuries were reported.
The train was not derailed but faces damages about $100k worth, the release says.
