Grinding of the Greens
When the holidays are over and you’re wondering what to do with your Christmas tree and lights, think about recycling them.
Right after Christmas, the Town of Hilton Head Island will host its 12th annual Grinding of the Greens program to recycle natural Christmas trees into mulch. For the first time, Christmas lights will be accepted for recycling. Recycling services will be available at the following drop-off locations from Monday, December 26, 2022, through Sunday, January 15, 2023:
Coligny Beach Parking Lot (Paved area on the South Forest Beach Side).
Old Gullah Flea Market Site (Off William Hilton Parkway and Chamberlain Drive).
Make sure to remove all ornaments, lights, and garland from trees to ensure the mulch is clean for grinding. When the grinding is complete, all are welcome to stop by and pick up free mulch starting Tuesday, January 17, 2023. Mulch will be available until Monday, January 23, or until it is gone. Last year, approximately 200 trees were dropped off and grounded into mulch.
The Outside Foundation, a local non-profit, is working with a recycling company to accept Christmas lights. Light collection bins will be clearly marked “recycled lights only.” After the collection is complete, bins containing the lights will be shipped to a recycler. 843-247-1561.
