September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide effort to raise awareness about hunger in America and inspire action.
Every action―big or small―is one step closer to an America where no one is hungry. When people are fed, futures are nourished, and we can all reach our full potential.
The Market at Bluffton Self Help provides free, fresh groceries, for more than 300 families each week (500 each month).
As is typical at the end of the summer, our warehouse is depleted and we need to focus on stocking the shelves with non-perishables, which we rely on the community to donate.
We are a wellness food market, which means we always have fresh produce, proteins, eggs and milk, in addition to non-perishables. Those items cost money.
Here is a little egg-milk-meat-math food for thought, based on current prices we are seeing:
• To provide 300 families with a ½ dozen eggs each week costs BSH $44,148 annually.
• To provide a ½ gallon of milk each week, costs $47,892 annually.
• Providing just one pound of protein each week costs BSH $121,680 annually.
Our food spend is up 40% year over year and 50-60 new families are coming to us each month to shop in The Market.
When a family shops with us weekly, they can save up to $500 that they can reallocate to other parts of their budget.
Anyone who lives or works in Bluffton is eligible to shop at BSH.
