SPORTS REPORT

The South Carolina Athletic Directors Association released the final Carlise Cup standings for the 2022-23 school year last week, presenting a quantifiable listing of the top all-around high school sports programs in the state, and three area schools cracked the top 10 in their classifications.

Beaufort High School recorded the highest finish among Lowco schools, tying for 7th place in Class 3A after a remarkable year that included the first football state title for a Beaufort County public school since the 1940s, state runner-up finishes in boys soccer and boys golf, and a deep playoff run from the baseball team.

May River finished 8th in Class 4A behind consistently competitive programs across the board with Hilton Head High right behind in 9th, buoyed by a state title in girls tennis in the fall.

Bluffton High School didn’t look far for its next head softball coach, promoting former assistant Rachael Zeides to take over for William Rose. Zeides was the starting shortstop at Rider University and has been a math teacher and assistant volleyball and softball coach at Bluffton for two years. The Bobcats will look to reload after sending four seniors to play at the next level this spring.

And on the links, we have two Lowco golfers through to the match play portion of the North & South Amateur up in Pinehurst, North Carolina. HHI native and Alabama Crimson Tide golfer Jonathan Griz earned the No. 3 seed and was taking on No. 30 seed Kazuma Kabori of New Zealand in the first round this morning, and May River alum and Clemson Tiger Andrew Swanson is the No. 8 seed and was facing No. 25 Colin Salema of Matthews, North Carolina, this morning.
