We’re in a bit of a lull for local sports news today, so let’s take a field trip and see what some of our Lowco superstars are up to these days.
Former Hilton Head Seahawk Carmen Mlodzinski has made it clear to the Pittsburgh Pirates front office that he doesn’t plan to go back to the minors. Since his callup on June 16, Mlodzinski has appeared in 14 games and compiled a 2.20 ERA over 16 ⅓ innings with 13 strikeouts, allowing an earned run in just three of his 14 outings. Closer David Bednar is the only Pirates reliever who has thrown more innings and has a lower ERA than Mlodzinski.
Another former Hilton Head Seahawk is poised to compete for a bigger role for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this fall. Jaylen Sneed still has all four years of eligibility left after taking a redshirt last season, even though he played in four games and led the Irish in tackles against Boston College. Reports out of South Bend indicate Sneed will be on the field early and often this season.
And while we’re on the subject of college football, how about Whale Branch alum Xavier Chaplin, who is penciled in as a starter on Virginia Tech’s offensive line this fall as a redshirt freshman. Chaplin played 27 snaps against Liberty for his only action as a true freshman, but at 6-6 and 328 pounds, the Hokies are counting on him to start either at left tackle or left guard. Be great, big fella.
