The Conroy Center will host two writers workshops and an in-person Open Mic Night in June:
Thursday, June 1, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Online. $45/person.
USA Today bestselling novelist Ann Garvin (There’s No Coming Back from This) will lead a class on crafting your Two-Sentence Elevator Pitch. So when someone asks, “what’s your book about?” or “what’s your writing about?” you will have a compelling, concise answer. For published or soon-to-be-published writers, this is an excellent marketing tool. But for any writer, this is an empowering exercise to learn to focus on the most essential and important aspects of your writing.
Tuesday, June 27, 5:00-7:00 p.m. At Conroy Center. $45/person.
Local novelist and memoirist Estelle Ford-Williamson will lead a follow-up to her popular writing family stories workshop. Attendance in the previous class is not required to attend this workshop. Estelle will offer some writing prompts to help guide the writing of stories about your family, as well as how to structure family stories into a cohesive narrative. She will also give an overview of some publishing opportunities for family stories. And participants will have the opportunity to share writing and get feedback.
Thursday, June 8, 6:00-7:30 p.m., BCBCC (711 Bladen St.) Free.
The Conroy Center holds a monthly Open Mic Night on the 2nd Thursday of each month, in partnership with the SC Writers Association. On odd-numbered months, Open Mic is virtual. On even-numbered months, like June, it is in person at the Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce. Local writers can sign up in advance to read from their work for 3 to 5 minutes each. Writers of all genres and all levels of experience are welcome. The evening ends with a longer reading from a featured writer. The featured writer for June is Helen P. Bradley, author of the debut novel Breach of Trust. Helen lives in Savannah, where she has worked as an advocate for crime victims. Her novel draws on those personal and professional experiences. Helen is also a former journalist and award-winning essayist. Copies of her new novel, Breach of Trust, will be available for sale and signing at the Open Mic Night.
