Children and families have undoubtedly been impacted by an array of extraordinarily challenging events and circumstances in the four years since the initial COVID lockdown. What do we need to know to help young people navigate a world of ongoing adversities, while continuing to recover from traumatic and stressful events of the past?
Former California Surgeon General, pediatrician, and author of The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Adversity, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, has long championed for childhoods that set us up for lifelong good health and well-being – and now, she’s working with ACE Resource Network to ensure hope for a generation of kids raised in seriously stressful times.
As a leader in the field of preventing and responding to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and toxic stress, Dr. Burke Harris is shedding light on the effects of toxic stress, as well as strategies to help prevent and heal. Specifically, Dr. Burke Harris will discuss how to:
Model Self-Care – Parents and caregivers can encourage important skills and priorities through leading by example
Encourage Social Connections – Positive relationships, like supportive mentors and peers, contribute to a sense of belonging, while providing vital physical and mental health benefits
Lean into Routine – Stability, predictability, and consistency reduce anxiety and stress and help young people feel safe and nurtured
Practice Resilience-Building Habits – Active movement, balanced nutrition, time in nature, adequate sleep, and mindfulness can be great for all ages
Learn More and Share – Understanding how our early experiences affect us can shift our perspective on our own health, and on the behaviors and needs of our kids
