SPORTS REPORT

When we last left you on Friday, it was High School Football Eve for one team in the Lowco, and the Beaufort Academy Eagles got everything on their list.

Beaufort Academy showed off a strong ground game led by Jaxen Porter and Devonte Green and a relentless offensive line and the defense buckled down and forced three turnovers in the red zone to earn a gritty 30-14 win over Trinity Collegiate on Saturday night in the 1team1cause Recovery Bowl at Charleston Southern.

BA marched down the field on the opening series and found the end zone on Porter’s 12-yard run, the first of three touchdown runs for the senior, who racked up 146 yards on 14 carries and added eight tackles on defense.

Green added 67 yards on 11 carries and a pair of two-point conversions along with a team-high 10 tackles and a key forced fumble inside the 10-yard line late in the game to seal the win.

It was a total team effort to give new coach Nic Shuford a win in his debut in blue, and a great first step toward getting back to Charleston Southern in November with a state title on the line.

For more coverage of the game, head over to @LowcoSports on Instagram and check out our reels from the sidelines and go inside the game on Lowco Pigskin Live, where BA senior Alex Williams joined me and Wes Kerr for more insight into the season opener. Find it on the Lowco Media YouTube channel.

That will give you a little taste of what’s to come with a full slate of 11 games we’ll be tracking under the Friday Night Lights and then jumping on live at 11 p.m. Friday to round it all up in real time with reports from games across the Lowco.

Between now and then, we’ll have a season preview edition of Lowco Pigskin Live dropping, including deeper looks at each team in the Lowco with predictions for how each region will shake out, and a preview of each game on tap in Week Zero as the high school football season kicks off in full swing.

The John Paul II volleyball team is already in midseason form, claiming the title at the Colleton Prep IP Builders Preseason Tournament in Walterboro on Saturday.

The Golden Warriors will have a chance to let the momentum pick up steam with three matches coming out of the gate this week, including the home opener Wednesday against St. Andrew’s. HHCA also putting the ball in the air at home tonight against St. Vincent’s.

And on the links, the junior golf season is winding down with school starting up, and lots of hardware made its way back to the Lowco at the SCJGA Tommy Cuthbert All-Star event this weekend, as Beaufort’s Simon McAlister shot even par over 36 holes to win the boys 15-18 title, Joshua Johnson Jr. won the 7-9 boys crown, and Landry Williams and Paul Morrell each notched runner-up finishes in their divisions.

Way to rep the Lowco!
