Courtney Hampson: Back to School Child Hunger Consequences | Bluffton Self Help

Back to School / Consequences of Child Hunger

Back to school: Children who experience hunger are prone to various adverse mental and behavioral consequences.

The research findings are clear: children who experience hunger are prone to various adverse mental and behavioral consequences. Food insecurity is linked to feelings of apathy, lack of motivation, and reduced classroom engagement. However, food security significantly contributes to promoting positive mental well-being in both children and adolescents. This is particularly crucial within the school environment, where ensuring students’ access to nutritious food is vital for their learning and overall growth.

In 2018, following discussions with school social workers in the Bluffton area, BSH initiated the School Snack Program. The program's purpose is to supply teachers with snacks that can be used as needed. Prior to this initiative, Beaufort County's school teachers were spending substantial amounts, often exceeding $500 annually, on snacks for their classrooms. While teachers often depended on parents to contribute snacks on a rotating basis, in instances where this need couldn't be met, teachers were shouldering the financial burden. Our aim was to alter this scenario.

57% of students in Beaufort County public schools are in poverty.
9400+ students are enrolled in Bluffton area schools

BSH volunteers deliver designated snacks to the area school social workers, on a monthly basis. Snacks will feed 200-300 children a day.

In 2022, Bluffton Self Help provided 23,339 snack units to Bluffton-area schools.

BUT, if you do the math, we would actually need just over 1,000,000 snacks to provide a snack to each student in need every day of the school year.

Our School Snack drive will run through early September. Financial donations can be made via our website and snack donations can be dropped off in person. Our most needed items list is on our website.
