Last month, we talked about the sharp increase in food-insecure residents of Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton counties, as reported by Feeding America.
While most of the food we provide is rescued from local stores, we also purchase fresh produce with grants and donations raised specifically for this purpose.
I’m pleased to tell you that we were recently awarded two grants to purchase fresh or frozen chicken for our neighbors in need!
We are grateful to the Colleton River Club, which increased its healthy food grant to provide chicken to Jasper County agencies. This will start this summer!
We recently received an amazing new grant from the S.L. Gimbel Fund, a component fund at The Inland Empire Community Foundation. This will enable us to provide chicken to many of our agencies in all of our service areas! We expect to distribute most of it in the fourth quarter.
Our new Hilton Head truck, #5, went into service a couple of weeks ago. We raised funds for it last year, and it was worth the wait to get the refrigeration unit and the shelving put in! This year, we raised funds for an additional Beaufort truck, and we expect it will be in service by the end of this year. Our trucks generally are in service for about 10 years and well over 100,000 miles and pick up and deliver almost three million pounds of food over their lifetime.
Post Vacation Food Donation continues through August 31. You don’t have to be a tourist to drop off unopened, nonperishable food - some residents have contributed extra food that wasn’t consumed by house guests or too much food bought for a party. This month, all food collected is going to St. Andrew by-the-Sea’s food pantry and soup kitchen on Hilton Head Island. We’re collecting in the Grayco parking lot every Saturday from 7:30 to 10 am, and we have donation boxes available outside FISH Coastal Restaurant in Coligny Plaza on weekends, and all week at the Palmetto Dunes Pass Office.
Monday, August 5 is our next Fresh Xpress produce distribution, at St. Andrew by-the-Sea starting at noon. We’ll have about 5,000 pounds of fresh produce to give away to anyone who needs a little help making ends meet. All they have to do is show up and bring a bag. We are grateful to our partners at the Lowcountry Food Bank for providing the produce.
