As we head into Spring, severe weather is often a concern in the Lowcountry.
Severe weather may come in the form of thunderstorms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, & lightning.
Residents and visitors to our area should be prepared and know what to do in the event of severe weather.
Three Easy Steps to Prepare:
1) HAVE AN EMERGENCY KIT
- 3-day supply of non-perishable food and water
- Battery-powered or hand-crank weather radio
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- First aid kit & medications
- Copies of important documents
- Extra cash ($200 in $1, $5, and $10 denominations)
2) MAKE A PLAN
- Know where to go! Shelter for tornado is in the inner-most part of your home away from windows. (Under stairs, in a bathroom, in a pantry, etc.)
- Practice emergency evacuation from your home.
- Where is your family meeting place?
- Don't forget about your pets! (Think about comfort items and treats to keep them calm. Consider talking to your veterinarian about pet anxiety and how you can help ease it.)
- How will you communicate with friends and loved ones?
3) STAY INFORMED & CONNECTED
- Have several methods of receiving emergency information/notifications. (NOAA Weather radio, Nixle, social media, legacy media outlets, etc.)
- Keep a printed list of important phone numbers.
- Keep phones charged and have a portable charger for emergencies.
Lastly, Spring is a good time to review your insurance coverage. Talk with your insurance provider to make sure you have adequate coverage. Damage from flooding and earthquakes may require additional coverage.
Don't forget to Spring forward one hour before going to bed this Saturday!
