SPORTS REPORT

Hey, it’s time for Last Night in the Lowco on WHHI, powered by LowcoSports.com!

The high school basketball playoffs tipped off last night with eight Lowco area teams in action and hoping to survive and advance to round 2. But only two of them survived.

The Bluffton girls didn’t have any trouble with visiting Richland Northeast, blitzing the Cavaliers early to take a 36-6 halftime lead before coasting to a 65-26 victory. Star senior Tacoya Heyward racked up 29 points, 12 rebounds and five assists, and freshman sensation Amirah Brown added 25 points, nine boards, and six assists to lead the Bobcats, who host North Myrtle Beach for a second-round matchup Friday night.

Heyward was our guest last night on the Lowco Hoops Report and gave us more insight into the Bobcats’ 19-game winning streak and the emotions attached to knowing every game could be the last of her high school career, as well as her decision to play at Claflin University next season.

The Hampton County boys also made quick work of their first-round opponent, hammering Lake Marion 97-59 over in Estill to earn another home game Friday against Mullins, the team that knocked Wade Hampton High School out of the postseason a year ago. Buckle up for a good one.

It was the end of the road for the rest of the Lowco contingent last night, as the girls from Hilton Head, May River, and Whale Branch made early exits on the road, while the boys from Beaufort High, Battery Creek, and Ridgeland-Hardeeville bowed out in round 1. The Dolphins and Jaguars put up good fights on the road, though.

More playoff action on tap tonight, including home games for the Hampton County girls and the boys from Colleton County and Bridges Prep, and the USCB Sand Sharks are back in The Cove for Peach Belt Conference matchups with Georgia College.

For LowcoSports and WHHI, I’m Justin Jarrett. Until next time, Go Lowco!
