Steve Wilmot: Economic Impact / 2025 Plans | RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing

A recent study shows the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing continues to produce an impressive economic impact for South Carolina. According to the survey conducted by Clemson University’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, the PGA TOUR golf tournament had a total economic impact of $134.9 million during tournament week, April 15-21, 2024. After adjusting for inflation, that is an 11% increase over the last survey conducted in 2019.

A web-based survey was developed and sent to the email addresses of over 22,000 attendees of the 2024 tournament. Over 4,100 usable surveys were returned. In addition to visitor spending, spending data was collected from the Heritage Classic Foundation and several sponsors. An estimate of the economic impact of the tournament was done using the REMI economic model.

Researchers measured the economic activity and impact estimates in four ways:

1. Direct spending (estimate of actual expenditures by visitors and the foundation): $106.6 million

2. Jobs (number of jobs supported by economic activity): 1,161

3. Net state and local government revenues (taxes and other fees generated by economic activity, minus expenses incurred): $8 million

4. Total output (total impact, including direct, indirect and induced effects): $134.9 million

This survey was the sixth conducted for the Heritage Classic Foundation and clearly outlines that the tournament has steadily increased its impact on South Carolina’s economy.

“The RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing continues to be a premiere and important event for the State of South Carolina and the Hilton Head/Beaufort County region. Hilton Head Island is a small and unique market for the PGA TOUR which truly makes it a destination event,” said Dr. Bob Brookover of Clemson’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management. “The economic contribution of $134.9 million is outstanding and represents excellent growth since the 2019 study. Being designated as a Signature Event speaks to the great work that is being done by the Heritage Classic Foundation and its staff to create an amazing tournament experience. Most importantly, the tournament’s success ensures that their charitable giving continues to positively impact the region.”
