Camp Conroy 2023 Experience
The summer camp for young writers and artists is concluding our 6th year this week. 20 campers, ages 8 to 14, have been writing and illustrating a book together, which will be available for sale in August.
As part of their camp experiences this year, the campers have also learned from published authors and taken a field trip to Hilton Head to go to Historic Mitchelville and the Coastal Discovery Museum.
This year's camp has used Treasure Island as a theme, leading the campers to consider what it is they treasure.
Millie Bennet is in her second year as a camp counselors. She is a new graduate of Beaufort High School, and she will be attending the College of Charleston in the fall to study Art and Women's Studies. Millie has been an intern of the Pat Conroy Literary Center.
Sofie Jackson is 10. This is her second year as a camper, but her first year was virtual. Sofie is this year's editor-in-chief of the camp book, so she has a leadership role in the project. Sofie also wrote the introduction to the book.
Ava Wilson turned 12 this weekend. This is her third year as a camper. Ava is a very creative storyteller and has really enjoyed working with the instructors and camp counselors.
