It was a big night on the baseball diamond with the front end of some key region series, including a Lowco-on-Lowco showdown at Hilton Head Christian Academy, where the Eagles brought a five-game win streak into their first meeting with undefeated Hilton Head Prep.
Clemson signee Steele Burd staked the Eagles to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Prep’s JP Pirkey weathered the storm and the Dolphins erupted for six runs in the third inning and shut out HHCA over the final four innings in an 8-5 win. Rematch Wednesday afternoon in Sea Pines.
Team Lowco’s Wes Kerr was in The Tank at May River, where the Sharks opened the scoring on Joe Schroeder’s two-run blast in the fourth and Will Corn made sure that was enough, striking out 10 in a three-hitter as May River took the opener 7-1 to stay perfect in region play and keep pace with James Island, which rallied for a 5-3 win over Bluffton.
In other baseball action, Holy Trinity earned a statement win over Battery Creek and John Paul II held off Memorial Day 9-7.
May River’s softball team continued its red-hot start with an 11-1 win over John Paul the 2nd, as the Sharks banged out 16 hits including a 4-for-4 night for Ana Caraballo and three hits apiece from Charlotte Berkley and Olivia Nagel, who struck out seven in a complete game.
Slow night on the soccer pitch, but May River’s boys won 2-1 at Richmond Hill and Beaufort Academy topped Palmetto Christian 4-1, while Hilton Head’s boys lacrosse and tennis teams won convincingly.
