SPORTS REPORT

Week 1 kicked off Thursday with the Hilton Head Seahawks putting on a clinic in a 65-0 win at Stall. Thaddeus Czarnecki rushed for a pair of TDs and had one of Hilton Head’s two blocked punts, and Derrick Raniszewski threw two TD passes to Carson Haines and rushed for another for the Seahawks, and Andrew Massey and Caleb Spangler led the shutout on defense.

Not to be outdone, the Bluffton Bobcats posted a lopsided shutout of their own, as Aedan McCarthy threw six touchdown passes — four of them to Carnell Warren — and Chris Doyle and Kaleb Gadson led a dominant defensive performance in a 57-0 rout of Whale Branch.

May River’s defense didn’t pitch a shutout, but the Sharks allowed only one touchdown on defense and showed off a balanced ground game led by quarterback Tanner Macy, who rushed for 76 yards and three TDs on 12 carries with Asa Haskins and Andrew Johnson also finding the end zone in a 34-13 win over Airport.

Up at Fort Dorchester, Beaufort’s Samari Bonds and Amare Patterson hooked up for two late touchdowns to pull the Eagles even at 21 in the fourth quarter, but the host Patriots scored the winning touchdown with 20.9 seconds left to escape with the win. Elias Johnson added a touchdown run for Beaufort, and Will Codding racked up 11 tackles for the Eagles.

After giving up 63 points last week, Hilton Head Christian Academy’s defense bounced back in a big way to stifle a Battery Creek offense with several dynamic playmakers, and Reid McCollum rushed for 122 yards and 2 TDs to go along with 156 passing yards in a 17-7 road win seen on Beaufort’s Own. Ethan Foster made a leaping interception near the goal line to preserve the lead just before halftime, and the defenses slugged it out after the break, with Ian Kelly’s field goal icing it late.

Ridgeland and Hardeeville are fielding separate varsity teams for the first time since 2012, and both won big on Friday. Wenson Smith piled up 237 yards from scrimmage and scored three TDs to lead the Jaguars to a 30-6 win over Eau Claire, while Louis Gadson scored three TDs and Camari Brown added two to power the Hurricanes to a 48-6 rout of Bethune-Bowman in their first varsity game in 12 years.

At Thomas Heyward, Josh Gibson took two kickoffs to the house, and Donovan Robinson and Colton Young each notched a pick-6 as the Rebels’ defense and special teams stole the show in a 41-32 win over Bethesda Academy. Tony O’Banner rushed for 97 yards and two TDs for the Rebels.

And the streak is over in Sea Pines. After 1,080 days without tasting victory, Wyatt Harmer threw touchdown passes to Finnian Rooney and Brody Hausher to rally Hilton Head Prep from a 13-0 deficit, and Wyatt Butler took an interception back for a touchdown to lead the Dolphins to their first win since 2021, snapping a 25-game skid in coach Doug McFadden’s second game at the helm.

Hampton County has reloaded. Jaylen Singletary piled up 225 rushing yards on just 10 carries, scoring two eye-popping touchdowns and adding a 98-yard run from the 1 to the other 1, and Jayvin Risher added 117 yards and two TDs on the ground as the Hurricanes blew by Colleton County 41-20.

Colleton Prep is 2-0 after Walker Bryan racked up 221 rushing yards and scored four TDs to lead the War Hawks to a 28-13 win over St. John’s Christian, while John Paul the 2nd’s late rally fell short in a 54-25 loss to Laurence Manning, and Cross Schools was no match for defending SCISA 8-man champion Jefferson Davis, which led 36-0 after one quarter and cruised 54-0.

Perhaps the best story of Week 1, though, came from Patrick Henry’s 34-7 win over Academic Magnet, where the Patriots took the field for the opening kickoff with just 10 players. The 11th, Mac Gohagan, was on the sideline after undergoing a heart transplant this summer. An amazing tribute capped by a big win.
