Spring Forward Means Change Your Batteries!
Key messages:
1) Right alarms in the right locations
2) Replace smoke alarms older than 10 years
3) Develop and practice family fire escape plan
March 10th is the start of Daylight Saving. It's also a great time to test your smoke alarms and change the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.
- South Carolina had 84 fatal fires with 98 fire-related deaths in 2023.
- The majority of fires (29%) were the result of electrical items. Home fires were the location of 76% of all fires in SC.
- Fires are moving faster so properly working smoke alarms are essential in every home to give residents time to get out.
- Interconnected smoke alarms provide the best level of notification. Don't downgrade to battery only as they will only alarm in a single location versus throughout your residence.
- When in doubt just get out! Once out of a residence, gather family at pre-determined meeting place and wait for firefighters to arrive. Never go back inside a residence for any reason.
