Vern Sallee: Drone as First Responders DFR | Axon

How Police Departments are Utilizing Advanced Technology to Better Protect Communities

Drone as First Responder (DFR) technology, once a futuristic concept, is now revolutionizing emergency response. DFR involves drones being remotely deployed to an incident scene, often arriving within two minutes. This rapid deployment provides real-time visibility, enhances situational awareness, improves decision-making and can potentially de-escalate situations before ground units arrive. At a time when agencies across the country are faced with staffing challenges, DFR programs in public safety can help with efficiency, leading to a 20-30% reduction in unnecessary officer dispatches and optimizing resource allocation.

Axon’s Vern Sallee discusses how drones are being used in police forces across the country. He’ll share some real-life examples of how drones as a first responder assist the police force, offering immediate response capabilities that can significantly enhance emergency services and potentially save lives.

EXAMPLES OF WHEN A DRONE AS A FIRST RESPONDER CAN BE HELPFUL:

• De-escalation and Officer Safety: By providing an aerial view of potentially dangerous situations, DFR programs can help de-escalate conflicts and improve officer safety without putting personnel at immediate risk.

• Crime Prevention and Suspect Tracking: DFR drones can quickly track fleeing suspects or monitor ongoing criminal activities, providing crucial real-time information to ground units.

• Search and Rescue Operations: DFR drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras have been used to successfully locate missing persons in challenging terrains.

• Traffic Management: DFR programs can quickly assess and document traffic accidents, helping to clear roads faster and manage traffic flow more efficiently.

Vern Sallee, a distinguished law enforcement veteran, dedicated 25 years to the Chula Vista Police Department before retiring as Patrol Operations Captain in October 2020. During his tenure, Sallee spearheaded the establishment and expansion of the department's innovative drone program, pioneering the groundbreaking "Drone as a First Responder" (DFR) initiative. Recognized as a subject matter expert, he has shared his insights on numerous UAS panels and presentations, collaborating with organizations such as the FAA and USDOJ, as well as industry leaders in both the UAS and public safety sectors. Currently, Sallee serves as the lead strategist for Axon Air, the UAS division of Axon. In this role, he has guided hundreds of agencies in establishing and expanding their UAS programs, contributing to the broader dialogue on law enforcement technology integration and its impact on public safety.

Axon is a technology leader in global public safety. Their moonshot goal is to cut gun-related deaths between police and the public by 50% before 2033.
