The boys of summer take center stage again this weekend with the South Carolina Dixie Boys and Dixie Junior Boys state tournaments starting with the opening ceremony and home run derby tonight at 7 at Oscar Frazier Park in Bluffton.
The games begin Saturday morning and most of the action will be in the 14-and-under Dixie Boys bracket, where the host Beaufort County team is among 11 teams vying for the state title and a trip to the Dixie World Series in South Hill, Virginia. The first games start at 10 a.m. with the local boys on deck at 12:30 p.m. for their opener against Mount Pleasant. The first one is always big. Wanna stay in that winner’s bracket as long as possible.
Only three teams are competing in the 13-and-under Junior Boys bracket with the winner advancing to the Dixie World Series in Opelika, Alabama, and the Beaufort County squad gets to scout the competition Saturday before taking on Oconee County on Sunday and Tri-County on Monday.
The local teams are loaded with future high school stars from around the Lowco, and even a handful of names you might have already become familiar with this spring, so it’s a great chance to scout some up-and-coming Lowco Diamond Dudes.
