Child Passenger Safety Week is coming up! September 15-21 will be a week of safety emphasis nationwide.
The Fire District will be hosting a FREE child car seat check on Saturday, September 21, from 9AM - 12PM at Station 38 (260 Raider Dr.).
Traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for children, and a child’s best protection in a crash is to be buckled correctly in the right seat.
Unfortunately, many parents are overconfident about their car seats. In fact, the latest research shows that 46% of car seats are misused.
A NHTSA study found that while most parents and caregivers believe they know how to properly install their car seats, about half (48%) have installed their child’s car seat incorrectly.
BTFD and other area fire agencies have certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians available to help parents determine the right seats for their children and demonstrate how to correctly install and use those seats.
Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians must complete a 40-hour class, pass a written knowledge-based exam, and demonstrate proficiency in proper car seat installation in several real-world scenarios. On top of that, they must complete continuing education units and recertify every two years.
