22 Days Light the Fire @ OPFOB in Ridgeland, SC
We lose 22 veterans and active duty military to suicide every day; one every 65 minutes. OPFOB is lighting a fire in remembrance of them and to bring awareness to this very alarming issue. We light the fire on Sunday, May 8 @ 3pm with Medal of Honor recipient LeRoy Petry and keep it burning for 22 days in remembrance of the veterans we have lost to suicide. Petry received the Medal of Honor for his actions in 2008 in Afghanistan. Between 50,000-100,000 Vietnam veterans have committed suicide. In Iraq and Afghanistan we lost 7,000 on those battlefields; we have lost over 30,000 of those heroes to suicide (more than 4 X than killed in action). On Memorial Day we then transfer the fire to a large bonfire area and have a ceremony also honoring our veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. After the ceremony, we will have something like a family picnic atmosphere allowing all to enjoy the holiday together after paying their respects. This event is open to the public.
