We are excited to announce that, thanks to generous volunteers and other donors, we have raised just about enough money to replace Truck #6 with a new truck! Our fundraising campaign ends on September 30; additional donations will go into the fund to buy another new truck next year. We continue to be amazed by the support we receive from this great community and the generosity of our volunteers, who give generously of their time and money for our neighbors in need. Post-Vacation Food Donation is continuing through September 30 at the Grayco Parking lot from 8 to 11 am. Every week, we meet more people who are grateful for the opportunity to not waste food, and to get it into the hands of people who need it. Come see us and help us finish strong! We’ve also placed a few more receptacles for people who need to get on the road earlier than that - at Palmetto Dunes’ Pass Office and General Store, at Shipyard’s Welcome Center, and at Sea Pines Welcome Center.
We’re grateful to Wine Time Bluffton, which has made Second Helpings their August charity of the month. Every bottle sold means a $1 donation - which enables us to rescue enough food for more than five meals!
Coligny’s Rock N’ Ribs Festival is only two months away, and we can’t wait for “A 2nd Helping of Music, Booze & Barbeque”! We were very excited to be included in FISH Coastal Seafood’s “Free Rock N’ Ribs Warm-Up” on July 22. We met the Cranford Hollow Band, which will also be featured at the event, and a lot of people who plan on attending!
The fall season also brings cooler weather and the return of many of our volunteers back to the area. We will be holding Volunteer Appreciation Events in September and October to thank and honor our many volunteers. We’ll be naming a Volunteer of the Year in each of our bases, and recognizing a lot of other people as well for their good and faithful service.
October is also the month that we’ll reach our 50 millionth pound of food rescued and distributed! Second Helpings has been serving our local community since 1992, beginning with four restaurants and a handful of agency partners. I’m proud and excited to be leading the organization at this point in its history, and look forward to even more success in the years ahead!
