SPORTS REPORT

Hey, it’s time to get caught up on what happened on the local sports scene over the holiday break with a new edition of Last Night in the Lowco on WHHI, powered by LowcoSports.com.

When we last left you we were preparing for some holiday hoops at the Bobcat Classic in Bluffton as well as an epic wrestling tournament at May River with 34 teams in town for the Shark Invitational.

And the teams and wrestlers repping the Lowco kept some of the hardware at home.

The Bluffton girls blazed to the Bobcat Classic title with three wins in three days, hammering Forsyth Central out of Atlanta in the opening round before fending off Cypress Bay (Fla.) in the semifinals and scrapping out a 47-42 win over Woodmont in the championship game.

Senior star Tacoya Heyward was named the tournament MVP and joined on the all-tournament team by Madi Washington, and fellow senior Ja’laina Mosley and freshman phenom Amirah Brown also made big contributions for the Bobcats, who have won eight straight since their only loss of the season and are 12-1 going into the new year.

Two days of intense wrestling action at May River High School resulted in the host Sharks placing third among 34 teams with only defending state champs South Effingham and Fort Mill finishing above them in the standings.

Battery Creek’s Gunnar DeGroat won the 175-pound title by pinning May River’s Josh Echeverria in the finals, while Bluffton’s Bradley Denmark was the runner-up at 285, and Sharks Houston Rudisill and Will Mauro placed third.

The action starts ramping back up tonight, and we’ll be back at it on the Lowco Media Network with new local sports shows every night – or waiting for you early birds every morning.

For LowcoSports and WHHI, I’m Justin Jarrett. Until next time, Go Lowco!
