Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries.
Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths.
BTFD has responded to several calls for fires related to unattended cooking. Two of those resulted in total loss of the homes and one resulted in a fatality.
Thirty-one percent of fires reported in the NFPA's most recent data showed that unattended cooking was the cause of the fire.
Set a timer if you have something in the oven or on the stove.
If you walk out of the kitchen, turn off the burner.
After you are done cooking, make sure your stove is turned off.
Keep flammable items away from your cooking area.
Keep children at least three feet away from cooking areas.
Turn handles of pots and pans in so that they are not easily grabbed by small children.
If a fire occurs in a microwave, oven, or toaster oven, close the door and unplug the appliance.
Slide a lid over a skillet or pot to deprive a fire of oxygen. Without the air, the fire will not easily spread.
If a pan catches fire, leave it on the stove, but turn off the burner.
Have a fire extinguisher located near the kitchen and know how to use it:
P - Pull the pin
A - Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
S - Squeeze the handle
S - Sweep back and forth until fire is out
If you cannot safely extinguish the fire, get out, get to safety, and call 911!
