We work to empower communities to participate in local decision-making processes!
Currently working with and alongside the St. Helena community and many partner organizations to uphold integrity of Cultural Protection Overlay:
--Community-driven zoning tool that has helped retain rural character and living Gullah/Geechee culture that has defined St. Helena for decades
--2040 comp plan “St Helena Spotlight” calls for strengthening the CPO and considering additional restrictions on incompatible development which is identified as the greatest threat to the sustainability of Gullah/Geechee land ownership and culture
--New wealthy developer seeking to build luxury golf resort and gated community on 500-acre
Pine Island property despite express prohibition against such uses in CPO
--Seeking an exception from the rules to be carved out of CPO, despite clear and consistent wishes of community and Beaufort County Council reinforcing the protections of the CPO just less than 2 weeks ago
Save the Date for June 5th Planning Commission meeting at 6pm at Council Chambers (100 Ribaut Rd) and join us on Saturday, May 27th to the Penn Center on St. Helena Island from 11am-3pm to celebrate the CPO with fried fish and BBQ and learn more about the request for rezoning and appeal
