Making great things from rescued food: Let’s see what we can do with whatever we’ve rescued today.
Second Helpings began 31 years ago by rescuing prepared meals from four restaurants on Hilton Head Island (none of them is still here, unfortunately). Volunteers supplied the restaurants with foil pans and lids and the restaurants filled them with leftovers and/or made entrees and sides specifically for Second Helpings. These meals went to institutions (including The Children’s Center, CAPA, and Hopeful Horizons), which simply had to plate and serve them. Today, we rescue food from grocery stores and other retail outlets. Our agencies and the people they serve adjust their meal planning “on the fly” because the rescued food we deliver is never the same assortment.
