Courtney Hampson: Adult Education Opportunities | Bluffton Self Help

The need for ESL and Adult Education Classes continues to grow in the Lowcountry. South Carolina has the 13th highest rate of functional illiteracy in the United States.

Education is a significant factor when it comes to income and serves as a strong predictor for poverty. In Beaufort County 28% of people who have not completed high school live below the poverty line. This number drops to 3% for people with a bachelor’s degree or more. In Jasper County those numbers are 25% and 6% respectively.

Bluffton Self Help offers more than a dozen classes and workshops to 500+ adult learners every year to improve literacy, gain skills, attain better employment and reach personal success. Each of our adult students and their families have Client Advocates available to them to help overcome any additional barriers they may face including meeting their basic needs, employment, benefits, and connecting them to additional community resources. We walk alongside all of our neighbors to ensure they are moving forward to reach their goals.

Literacy is connected with personal income, employment levels, health, and overall economic growth for our community. Nationwide, only 19% of high school dropouts make at least a livable wage. That jumps to 36% with a high school diploma or GED and 46% with some college. Education plays a decisive role in economic performance. Study after study shows those with more education earn higher salaries over their lifetime.

- Better math skills can increase salary by $21,000 per year.
- Improvement in reading and writing skills could spark an $11,000 increase in annual salary.
- Graduating with a high school diploma is equivalent to an additional almost $7,000 in annual salary.

Please visit our website to support Lowcountry adult students or to enroll in one of our classes today. Registration is now open for GED classes. In August additional workshops and classes will be available.
