Lowcountry Food Bank Mission: To lead the fight against hunger throughout the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina

Guiding Principles: Feed. Advocate. Empower.

Overview:
Lowcountry Food Bank serves the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina and distributed more than 40 million pounds of food, water and essential products in 2022. The Lowcountry Food Bank helps fight hunger by
distributing food to more than 250 partner agencies including on-site meal programs, homeless shelters and emergency food pantries.

Our Business Model
We work continuously to bring our partner agencies, who serve our food insecure neighbors directly after we have procured food, to the next level of capacity to even better serve people who need food assistance.

Our Southern Counties
In the four southernmost counties we serve (Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, Jasper, there are more than 25,000 people, more than 10% of the population, who are food insecure, which means on any given day, these neighbors do not know where their next meal will come from. Many who seek food assistance are working families who cannot make ends meet. 18% of these food insecure neighbors are children, which is more than 8,000 children. We have more than 40 partner agencies that serve these four counties, and to find a Lowcountry Food Bank partner food pantry or a free food distribution nearby, visit our website and click on FIND FOOD.

Advocacy
The Lowcountry Food Bank advocates on behalf of those who experience hunger and helps empower people to make healthy and nutritious food choices. We take the lead to increase awareness about hunger issues and help educate our community about the social and policy issues that surround food insecurity, such as federal and state policies and agricultural and nutrition programs.

Hunger is a national crisis, although it is often hidden. Lowcountry Food Bank aligns with Feeding America’s national advocacy efforts to support federal nutrition programs that help children, seniors, low-income individuals, families, and veterans. We believe state and local policies can directly impact equitable food access. We advocate for our neighbors who have been negatively impacted by outdated policies and systemic underrepresentation. We support universal free meals for school children, because when children have the nutrition they need, they thrive. We address transportation barriers that might otherwise keep those we serve from accessing food, and we ensure our food insecure neighbors are utilizing the food resources that are available, such as SNAP (formerly the Food Stamp program). We meet with our elected officials, sign on to letters that support hunger legislation as a part of the food banking community, and we are members of local coalitions that address the root causes of hunger.
