SPORTS REPORT
This was originally supposed to be the last week of the high school football regular season, and for most Lowco squads, it was, but we still have some unfinished business in Region 6-4A with the belated Bridge Bowl slated for Friday.
The stakes for that showdown were up in the air Friday night with a huge hometown showdown in The Tank at May River, where the Sharks hosted the rival Bluffton Bobcats in an epic battle seen on WHHI.
Bluffton’s Aedan McCarthy threw three touchdown passes with two of them going to star wideout Carnell Warren, but May River’s ground game led by Sean Mitchell and Andrew Johnson kept the Sharks in the game, and it was tied at 21 until Ethan Cartmel smoked a 44-yard field goal between the sticks to put the Bobcats on top.
The Sharks surged down the field and into the red zone, but facing a fourth-and-short they elected to go for it rather than try a game-tying field goal and a fumble on the ensuing play sealed the win for the Bobcats.
Bluffton’s win combined with Hilton Head’s 29-11 victory at Beaufort leaves the Bobcats and Seahawks tied with one region loss apiece, but they’ll be playing for second place in the region next week in The Den after Bishop England clobbered Colleton County. The Battling Bishops have the head-to-head tiebreaker over both Bluffton and Hilton Head, so they’ll be the region champs, regardless of Friday’s outcome, while both the Bobcats and Seahawks have the tiebreaker over May River, so the winner claims the No. 3 seed with the Sharks sliding to No. 4.
It was homecoming in Hardeeville for the first time in 12 years, and the Hurricanes made it a memorable one. Camari Brown scored a pair of touchdowns and dominated on defense, and Dylan Pryor got in the end zone to help The Ville claim a playoff spot with a 21-6 win over Allendale-Fairfax.
Whale Branch still had a chance to inject chaos in Region 5-2A, but the Warriors came up just short in a 21-14 loss to third-ranked Barnwell, while Battery Creek lost 46-13 at Hanahan. Both teams open the playoffs next week.
It was a region title showdown on Lady’s Island, with Beaufort Academy hosting Thomas Heyward, and the Rebels pulled away with a 21-point third quarter to roll to a 49-25 win, as Tony O’Banner rushed for 178 yards and two touchdowns, Nic Robinson scored twice on the ground, and three other Rebels found the end zone.
Hilton Head Christian Academy put a cap on a strong regular season with a blowout win over Hilton Head Prep, while Patrick Henry shut out Andrew Jackson Academy, Cross Schools made it a home-and-home sweep of Conway Christian, and John Paul II was pummeled by powerhouse Pinewood Prep.
The SCISA playoffs kickoff Friday and we’ll have a bunch of Lowco teams beginning their quest for a state title.
