On May 1-5, the Fire District is inviting the community to light up the night in red to honor fallen firefighters and their families.
Firefighters from the Bluffton Fire District will be reaching out to local businesses, gated communities, and residents to encourage them to light up their respective locations with red lighting.
All 9 fire stations, the Administrative Annex, and Training Center will be lit up in red each night to honor the brave men and women who died protecting their communities.
Ninety-one firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1981 are listed on the Roll of Honor at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.
The National Fallen Firefighter Foundation created Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters to recognize the 25th Anniversary of the organization's inception and the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend.
This year's National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service will take place on Sunday, May 5.
Public Law 107-51 requires the lowering of the American flag to half-staff on all Federal buildings to memorialize fallen firefighters on May 5th.
Many fire stations around the country will also sound their sirens at noon on Sunday, May 5, in honor of the fallen firefighters. Doing this has been a traditional sign of honor and respect going back decades.
