Anastasia Albanese-O’Neill & Dr. Desmond Schatz: Type 1 Diabetes Detection

TYPE 1 DIABETES CAN BE DETECTED YEARS BEFORE PATIENTS EXPERIENCE SYMPTOMS

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) affects 1.9 million Americans and impacts people of all ages – children, adolescents, and adults. T1D develops in three stages and most people are not diagnosed until the final stage – when symptoms appear, blood sugar is high and insulin dependence begins.

However, many are unaware that testing is available, allowing T1D to be detected months to even years before people experience these symptoms. A new survey from the Diabetes Leadership Council reports that two-thirds of parents are unaware that T1D can be detected before symptoms occur. More than half (55 percent) of parents surveyed said they would proactively have their child screened for T1D, if they knew it could reduce the risk of a life-threatening complication.

T1D screening can be done through a blood test and can help reduce risk for a serious complication of T1D by 50% in people who are newly diagnosed.
