Three key messages:
1) Be visible - Flashlights and glow sticks or brightly colored and reflective materials so kids can be seen.
2) Be aware of open flames - Long trailing fabric on costumes may come into contact with them. Consider battery-powered lights instead of candles. Purchase costumes and accessories that are flame-resistant.
3) Keep doorways and exits clear of decorations - In case of fire, nothing should be blocking escape routes.
Statistics:
- Decorations are the first thing to ignite in more than 800 reported home fires each year.
- Nearly 1/3 of those fires are started by a candle.
- 3 of 5 candle fires started when things that can burn were too close to the candle.
- Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year.

Bluffton Fire District will have a huge section of the parking lot set up with interactive displays. Parents and children will have an opportunity to use a fire hose to extinguish fire, practice using a fire extinguisher, run a mini obstacle course simulating what a firefighter recruit might experience, practice CPR and get real-time feedback, try hydraulic rescue tools used in rescuing people from vehicles, and so much more.
PLUS there will be LOTS of candy and a costume contest at 6:30.
