Brenda Shaw: Fueled by Fresh Matching Gift Challenge | Lowcountry Food Bank

Fueled by Fresh - Matching Gift Challenge June 1-3, 2023

Fueled by Fresh produce available at no cost for our neighbors who face hunger

Economic inflation and high food prices make mobile distributions critical to our food-insecure neighbors' well-being.

Demand for food assistance remains high.

40% of the food we distribute is fresh produce to neighbors who face food insecurity.

Established in 2020 by LCFB Board of Directors member Michael Wilson and his wife Pam Wilson, the Fueled by Fresh matching gift challenge supports Lowcountry Food Bank’s ability to purchase fresh produce for mobile food distributions. On June 1, Lowcountry Food Bank is excited to be joined once again by the Wilsons to implement Fueled by Fresh to provide nutritious produce to Lowcountry families who experience food insecurity.

As the school year comes to a close and summer quickly approaches, children risk losing the nutritious breakfast and lunch meals they receive when school is in session. Many children rely on these meals to meet the nutritional needs their rapidly growing bodies and minds need each day. Fueled by Fresh produce distributions break down the barriers to food access that many community members face such as a lack of transportation and difficulty finding healthy food at a convenient time and location. Mobile food distributions meet our neighbors where they are and help fill the summer meal gaps that children face.

We make equitable food access a priority, and we work diligently to reach neighbors and communities that have the highest food insecurity rates in the 10 counties we serve. The struggles of families are heightened by the fact that governmental, pandemic-era emergency food programs and unemployment benefits that were created to help families overcome new barriers to food access have expired, which creates a gap that threatens families’ overall wellbeing.

Summer is a time of year when school breakfast and lunches are not available for schoolchildren, and thousands of Lowcountry children may worry about when they will get their next meal. Mobile food distributions meet our neighbors where they are and help fill the summer meal gaps that our children face.
