The third edition of the Beaufort Human Library project will be held on opening day of National Library Week: Sunday, April 23, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, in bldg. 12 of the Technical College of the Lowcountry’s Beaufort Campus. More than a dozen volunteer storytellers will be on hand to be checked out by guests for 20-30 minute conversations about the unique aspects of their lives and the obstacles they have faced. The Bookshelf includes law enforcement, educators, faith leaders, immigrants, artists, and others who represent the diverse communities of Beaufort. As a special guest to this edition, historical re-enactor Donald Sweeper will be appearing as Robert Smalls, thanks to a grant from South Carolina Humanities.
Some other Books include Beaufort city Councilman Maj. Gen. Mitch Mitchell, retired FBI special agent Dana Ridenour, Japanese-born artist Aki Kato, TCL Associate VP Rodney Adams, Battery Creek High School senior Isabella Troy, and Hilton Head native Lola Campbell.
Nicknamed the Bookmarks, student volunteers from Battery Creek High School, Beaufort High School, and Beaufort Academy will be on hand to help facilitate the experience for guests. The event is free and open to the public, presented in collaboration between the Conroy Center, TCL, and a planning committee of community organizers.
