When Hilton Head Prep golfer Bridget Wilkie joined us on the LowcoSports Lowdown last week, she was preparing for four straight days of big-time competition across two events.
Well, one title is in the bag, and Wilkie should wrap up the second one this afternoon.
After shooting 4-over-par across 36 holes in difficult scoring conditions at Moss Creek this weekend to claim a four-shot victory at the Women’s South Carolina Golf Association and Junior Golf Foundation’s High School Invitational, and she opened her bid for a third consecutive SCISA girls title with a scorching 5-under-par 67 on Monday at Orangeburg Country Club to open an eight-shot lead and give Hilton Head Prep a 21-shot cushion atop the leaderboard.
Barring something crazy, it’s highly likely that Wilkie has already claimed her third straight individual title and the Dolphins were crowned state champs for the fourth consecutive year when the final putt dropped … it’s probably been a couple hours now … but we’ll let you know how it played out tomorrow.
Meanwhile, remember former Bluffton Bobcats quarterback Lee Kirkland? Big guy, built like a truck? Well, he’s a senior at the University of Pikeville, where he led the Bears to a 52-10 win over Union College on Saturday and earned NAIA National Offensive Player of the Week honors after throwing for 614 yards on 38-of-58 passing with six touchdowns, setting school and conference records for completions, attempts, and passing yards.
It’s the second national player of the week award of Kirkland’s career.
