SPORTS REPORT

The ballpark was buzzing in Hardeeville this weekend with both the USCB baseball and softball teams hosting Peach Belt Conference opponents for three-game sets, and after the lowest of lows in Saturday’s series opener against 16th-ranked Georgia Southwestern, the Sand Shark baseball team ended the weekend on a high.

After enduring a 25-1 drubbing against the Canes in the opener, the Sand Sharks walked off the preseason PBC favorites twice on Sunday, rallying for three runs in the bottom of the 10th to win it on Hunter Miller’s bases-loaded walk in the matinee, and finishing the sweep when Carson Phillips tripled and scored on Julian Galassi’s walk-off single in the nightcap.

USCB standout Brian Meyer helped us recap the big series win Sunday night on Sand Shark Rewind, now streaming on-demand on the Lowco Media Network on YouTube. We also recapped a wild softball series, as the Sand Sharks outslugged Lander 11-10 on Saturday, winning it on a bases-loaded hit by pitch from former Bluffton Bobcats star Alyssa Rose, before letting two close games slip away Sunday despite a huge weekend from catcher Addie Reynolds, who slugged three home runs.

The USCB basketball teams wrapped up their inaugural season Saturday at Augusta with both Sand Shark squads coming up short in strong efforts on the road. The women trimmed a 19-point deficit to five in the final minute but couldn’t close the gap, ending their hopes of claiming a spot in the eight-team Peach Belt Conference Tournament, and the men fell 98-91 despite another 26 points from freshman phenom Marcus Overstreet. College basketball in the Lowco is here to stay.

The high school soccer season is cranking up quickly, and even with the soggy conditions this weekend, there was plenty of action on the pitch, including the finals of the Warrior Invitational at Whale Branch, where three days of soccer culminated with the championship games Saturday afternoon.

Bridges Prep knocked off Battery Creek 2-1 in the girls championship - aka the Amazonian Bracket - and the Bucs also went undefeated in the boys bracket, including a 4-1 win over Palmetto Scholars for the Spartan Bracket championship, and Beaufort High’s boys claimed the Zulu Bracket title with a 3-1 win over Battery Creek.

The Bluffton boys continued their impressive start to the season in their second stint under coach Josh Fox, as the Bobcats bettered Aiken 3-1 on Friday in the rain and earned a 2-1 overtime win over Catawba Ridge on Saturday to improve to 3-0 heading into region play. The May River Sharks fell to Catawba Ridge 3-2 on Friday but bounced back with a 3-2 win Saturday against Irmo, which played Hilton Head High to a 1-1 draw on Friday. The Sharks and Seahawks go head-to-head to open the Region 7-4A slate Friday night in The Tank.

The first big track meet of the season went off Saturday at The Wood Lowcountry Invitational at Woodland High School, where the boys from Hilton Head and Beaufort tied for fifth among 25 teams, and the Beaufort girls placed ninth to lead the Lowco contingent. Hilton Head’s Zach Sellars blazed to gold in the boys 400 meters, while May River’s Noah Wasserman won the boys 3200, and Beaufort’s Yzeult Antia won gold in the girls 800 and placed second in the 1600 and eighth in the 400 hurdles.

High school baseball is winding up, too, and John Paul II stayed perfect on the young season with a doubleheader sweep of St. Andrew’s on Saturday, while Beaufort High opened the season with two big wins at the Sandlapper Shootout, rallying for a 5-4 walkoff win over Byrnes before pounding Pendleton 9-2.

The Eagles cross the Broad River for a battle with the Bluffton Bobcats tonight. Should be a good one.

And the Hilton Head Christian Academy lacrosse program notched its first two wins this weekend, routing Trinity Collegiate 15-1 in a soggy showdown Friday night before running it back for a 14-4 win in the rematch Saturday. First of many for the fledgling HHCA lacrosse team.

Wes Kerr and I will look back on the biggest headlines from the weekend and round up the results from a busy Monday night on the LowcoSports scene live at 10 p.m. on the LowcoSports Lowdown. Plus, you never know who will stop by to join the conversation. Find it on the Lowco Media Network on YouTube or on our social media feeds.
