8th Annual Dolphin Count

The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network (LMMN) invites the community to join the 8th annual Dolphin Count on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at sites across the Charleston area.
This free, family-friendly event gives participants of all ages the opportunity to work alongside marine mammal experts to count and observe local bottlenose dolphins from shore-based sites throughout the Lowcountry.
Volunteers will learn about Charleston’s resident dolphin population, explore responsible wildlife viewing practices, and support the next generation of marine stewards. Observations gathered during Dolphin Count contribute to LMMN’s Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping and long-term monitoring of dolphin activity and habitat use in the area.
With 11 land-based sites available, participants can choose a location that’s convenient and enjoy a meaningful morning outdoors. In past years, Dolphin Count has engaged over 500 participants - making it one of LMMN’s most impactful community science events.
“Charleston is incredibly lucky to have a resident dolphin population that we can see right from shore,” said Lauren Rust, Executive Director of the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network. “But these animals face growing threats. Dolphin Count and Dolphin Week give people the chance to learn, take action, and become part of the solution to protect this iconic species and their habitat.”
Dolphin Count is the capstone event of Dolphin Week, running April 21–26, 2025. Other activities include sunset yoga, a dolphin boat cruise, and a guided kayak paddle, all designed to celebrate and raise awareness for local dolphin conservation.
