Historic Bluffton Lecture Series Returns on November 12, 2024
Joseph McGill, Jr., founder of the Slave Dwelling Project will present "Sleeping with the Ancestors" at the Campbell Chapel AME Church Fellowship Hall at 25 Boundary Street, Bluffton on November 12. Doors open at 5:30 PM; the presentation starts at 6:00 PM.
A Call to Action, a Bluffton-based nonprofit, is kicking off a new lecture series after taking a year off. Mr. McGill is our first speaker.
A portion of the proceeds will go toward the restoration of the historic Campbell Chapel, which is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is currently a site in the nationwide Reconstruction Era National Historic Network, which includes sites affiliated with the Reconstruction Era.
The church is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the transfer of the deed from the original congregation to the nine freedmen who began a new congregation there.
The goal of the lecture series is to engage people in exploring and appreciating community history and culture so that we may preserve it for future generations.
