SPORTS REPORT
The high school sports season in the Lowco came to a close last night with the Class 1A track and field championships, and the Whale Branch Warriors sent us into summer on a high note.
The Whale Branch girls claimed their second consecutive Class 1A state championships last night at Lower Richland High School, collecting 78 points to outpace runner-up St. Joseph’s by 18 for the title.
Destiny Pryor led the way for the Warriors with gold in the 100 meters, bronze in the 200, and a fifth-place showing in the long jump, and she helped Whale Branch claim the 4x100 relay title. Talaijah Bartley also claimed gold in the 100-meter hurdles, and the Warriors won the 4x400 relay. Grace Bing and Larmore Pryor also scored in multiple events to help Whale Branch bring it home.
The Whale Branch boys finished fourth behind a powerful performance from Bradford Thompson and a relentless effort from Jesse Richardson. Thompson won the discus and was second in the shot put, and Richardson was runner-up in the 1600 and 3200 and placed third in the 800.
Estill’s girls placed eighth with state title from Amirah Lewis in the 400-meter hurdles and Jamaisha Roberts in the triple jump, and the Gators were ninth in the boys standings.
