Second Helpings and our partner organizations are making a difference! The community helping the community.
Thanks to everyone who joined us at the Souper Bowl of Caring last month - we had a great time and raised over $5,500 - enough to rescue almost 30,000 meals - for our neighbors in need!
After food rescue, our Healthy Food Initiative is our biggest program. We supplement rescued food by purchasing and distributing fresh fruits and vegetables. Research shows that not having access to enough fresh produce can lead to deficiencies in vitamins and minerals that are linked to a greater risk of diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s Disease, and cancer.
Funding available for fresh produce is down this year because of COVID relief programs coming to an end. But the need is still great, so we’ve been working hard and trying new things to fill the gap. Here’s how:
We have a new Fresh Xpress program on Hilton Head Island, and in Bluffton!
With support from the Lowcountry Food Bank, we've started bringing full truckloads of fresh fruits and vegetables onto Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton to distribute to our neighbors in need. Our first distribution included 4,200 pounds of carrots, cabbages, apples, and potatoes. It took place a few weeks ago at St. Andrew’s by-the-Sea, manned by their great group of volunteers. The event was publicized by all of our Hilton Head agencies, and we served nearly 500 people!
Last Monday, we distributed nearly 6,000 pounds of fresh produce to 740 people at the Church of the Cross Food Pantry.
Our next Fresh Xpress distribution is this Tuesday (March 12) at Sandalwood Community Food Pantry, from 10 am until noon. It’s open to the public, and they are encouraged to bring tote bags.
Follow us on Facebook to stay up to date with these distributions.
A Dataw Island fundraising event on February 18 raised enough to purchase and distribute 40,000 pounds of local, farm-fresh produce to our neighbors in need in the Beaufort area. We are grateful to the amazing volunteers who put it together and to those who attended and donated.
We are looking forward to the golf event of the year - the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing! Between now and April 21, please go to Giving Opportunities on the Heritage Classic Foundation’s website and pledge or donate to benefit Second Helpings. The good folks of the Heritage Classic Foundation will add 20% to your donation!
