National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month (July) and raising awareness of mental health services for minorities
According to the World Health Organization, the United States has one of the highest rates of mental illness in the world -- and minorities are disproportionately affected by persistent social stigmas and a lack of access to quality mental health care.
One study from the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health found that Black adults in the U.S. are more likely than white adults to report persistent symptoms of emotional distress, such as sadness, hopelessness, and feeling like everything is an effort. In addition, Black adults living below the poverty line are more than twice as likely to report serious psychological distress than those with more financial security.
