Chicken run! Second Helpings volunteers and I delivered more than 15,000 pounds of chicken to more than 40 food pantries, soup kitchens, family and senior programs all over Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton counties. We spread so much joy in doing it - our agency partners and their clients were so grateful. Thanks to a generous grant from the S.L. Gimbel Foundation, a component fund of the Inland Empire Community Foundation of Riverside, CA, we’ll be delivering over 60,000 pounds of chicken over the next several months. Chicken is considered to be an excellent source of protein and has less saturated and trans fats than many other animal protein sources. It’s an essential part of just about every cuisine, and we never get enough of it in our food rescue operations. This is part of our Healthy Food Initiative, where we purchase healthy produce and proteins with grants and donations to supplement rescued food to bring better nutrition to our neighbors in need.
Volunteer Appreciation Events. This is the time of the year when we bring together our volunteers on Hilton Head, in Beaufort, and in Bluffton to celebrate their incredible contributions and dedication. In 2023, our volunteers contributed 21,000 hours and drove 89,422 miles - that’s the equivalent of more than five times around the globe - to deliver 3.4 million pounds of food to our agency partners for our neighbors in need.
- October 1 was our Hilton Head event, and our volunteers chose Bob Zucker as Hilton Head Truck Volunteer of the Year. Bob is our Thursday Day Captain and our longest-serving volunteer, with 20 years and more than 520 truck trips under his belt.
- Margie Tomczak, our Fill the Need Program Chair, was named Non-Truck Volunteer of the Year. For seven years now, Margie has tirelessly worked to ensure that there is an abundance of food waiting for the buses of commuters who are on their way home from their jobs on Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton. Margie also manages the food pantry at Holy Family Catholic Church on the island.
Speaking of Fill the Need, there’s a celebration on Thursday at 4:30 pm to celebrate its seventh anniversary at the Palmetto Breeze Transfer Center in Bluffton. We’ll also be saying farewell and thank you to Palmetto Breeze’s Executive Director Mary Lou Franzoni, who is retiring. You know, it was Mary Lou who reached out to Second Helpings to start this program.
We are also conducting our annual Agency Conferences with our 54 Agency Partners - the food pantries, soup kitchens, family and senior programs we serve. The demand for food continues to grow, and most of our agencies are serving many new clients. Many of them are running quite low on non-perishable foods - canned foods, rice, dried beans, pasta, cereal, and ready meals - which we don’t get a lot of in our food rescue operations. Some of the neighborhoods on Hilton Head do food drives, which are so needed and appreciated. If anyone wants to organize a food drive and wants a little help from us, please give us a call at the office at 843-689-3689.
