There was a big crowd in the Deep End last night for a big-time wrestling showdown between two perennial powers with the May River Sharks hosting Lugoff-Elgin in the third round of the Class 4A dual playoffs, and the matchup was as good as advertised, going down to the final bout.
Josh Echeverria earned a decision at 175 pounds to give May River a 3-0 lead, but back-to-back pins put the Demons up 12-3 and Lugoff restored the nine-point margin with a pin at 106 after Beau Gwynn won by disqualification for stalling to earn six team points.
May River’s Marcus Foulk caught a key pin against a highly-ranked wrestler and Kaiden McCallum followed it up with a quick pin to give the Sharks their first lead, but an overtime battle at 126 went to the Demons and knotted it at 21, and a pin at 132 put Lugoff back on top before Houston Rudisill scored a pin and Dillon Seman earned a hard-fought decision to put May River on top 30-27 with three matches remaining.
They all went in Lugoff’s favor, giving the Demons a 41-30 victory and a trip to the Lower State finals.
On the basketball court, Whale Branch swept Royal Live Oaks and John Paul the 2nd took two from Andrew Jackson Academy, as Brady Mahoney scored a career-high 31 points to go with 11 boards and Gracie Henderson broke the school’s career record for 3-pointers in a blowout girls game, and Sean Phelan scored a season-high 25 in a 69-62 win for the boys.
