We’re working with our agency partners on Hilton Head Island to increase the amount of food available on the island, and to reach out to those who need food.
Feeding America estimates that several thousand people who live on the island, plus more who commute to work here, are food insecure. Many are difficult to reach because of cultural barriers.
More recent data from our Hilton Head agency partners suggest that the overall need has grown on the island. Most agencies reported a sharp increase in the number of people needing food in the fourth quarter, as high inflation is depleting savings.
Our agency partners on HHI include St. Andrew’s by the Sea, Grateful Hearts, Holy Family, St. Francis, Deep Well, Sandalwood Community Food Pantry, and the Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island.
St. Andrew’s and Holy Family are working together to create materials in Spanish and English to draw more clients on the south end.
We are also planning to add a new agency partner on the island to help get the food to our neighbors who need it.
We have two great events coming up on the island in February:
The annual Souper Bowl of Caring is being held on February 11 from 1 to 4 pm at Coligny Plaza. Patrons can sample a variety of soups from Coligny Plaza restaurants, and snacks and sweets from Coligny Plaza shops. All proceeds benefit Second Helpings.
February 23 is A Night of Big Band Favorites, benefiting Second Helpings and featuring local favorite Evolution Big Band. The event will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church, and tickets are available through our website.
The Village at Wexford has named Second Helpings their nonprofit partner for their 2023 Wine Down Wednesday events! The first one will take place on March 8 from 5 to 7:30 pm.
