Come volunteer with us! It is a workout, but you will feel great and make a difference in the process.
We have more than 450 volunteers who are the beating heart of what we do.
Nearly 400 of them are involved in rescuing food from our 47 food donors and delivering it, free of charge, to our 54 agency partners. They are the reason that we can provide more than three million pounds of food every year with a staff of three full-time and three part-time employees.
Because of our volunteers, every dollar donated to Second Helpings enables us to rescue enough food for five meals.
We are always looking for new truck volunteers - drivers and helpers - particularly in Bluffton and in Beaufort. Volunteers commit to spending one morning per month - or more, as their schedule permits. They pick up food from grocery stores Monday through Saturday and deliver it to food pantries, soup kitchens, family and senior programs for our neighbors in need.
It’s a good workout - no need to go to the gym that day! Truck volunteers generally need to be able to lift 40 pounds.
Volunteers also represent Second Helpings at events - everything from marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade to distributing fresh produce to our agency partners and the public to working on board committees. They also worked on our tourist food rescue program on Hilton Head and they represent us at the Beaufort Farmers’ Market.
Fall is when we bring our volunteers together on Hilton Head, Beaufort, and Bluffton for an evening of good food and conversation and recognize our Volunteers of the Year. New this year, we acknowledged the volunteers who have made more than 200 trips with a new award, the Second Helpings plate. These folks have handled half a million pounds of food or more over their volunteer careers! We’re creating a Wall of Honor in our board room to recognize these volunteers’ service to the organization.
Through October, we’ve recruited 65 new volunteers in 2024 to offset retirements and people moving away. Many new volunteers come to us through word of mouth. We also attend volunteer fairs and community events to recruit volunteers, and we enjoy talking with prospective volunteers about what we do.
Our volunteers find what we do to be a very rewarding experience. We recently conducted a volunteer survey, with about half of our truck volunteer base and many of our events volunteers responding. What we heard:

Community Thanksgiving Dinner at Hudson’s:
We are thrilled to again be part of the 25th Anniversary Community Thanksgiving Dinner, from 11 am to 3 pm on Thanksgiving Day - November 28 - at Hudson’s. Residents and visitors look forward to enjoying Thanksgiving dinner served family-style, with turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings. It’s free to attend and donations are accepted, which benefit Second Helpings, Deep Well, and Bluffton Self Help. After it’s over, our volunteers take the leftovers over to St. Andrew Soup Kitchen on the south end. We’re grateful to the sponsors, Hudson’s, and Gloria & Allen LaCoe for making this possible!
