Michelle Horn & Joe Jena: July 25th is National Hire a Veteran Day

Honor Our Vets by Hiring Them!

Learn about the challenges veterans face finding employment and the top 5 reasons why they are ideal job candidates.

Every day, hundreds of our military personnel leave the service in search of civilian employment. However, veterans entering the workforce after military service face a variety of challenges, and vying for civilian positions can be difficult for transitioning veterans. Most military personnel who went straight from high school or college into the military have never applied for a job before. What’s worse is the fact that these men and women are having difficulty translating their broad military experiences into private sector employment skills.

July 25th is National Hire a Veteran Day (#HireAVeteranDay), a reminder to employers to consider hiring veterans to fill their open positions. On July 23rd, U.S. Army veteran Michelle Horn will discuss the challenges veterans face when returning to the civilian workforce. She will be joined by Joe Jena, Director of Talent Acquisition at 84 Lumber, who will discuss how companies benefit from hiring veterans. They will also discuss the Top 5 Transferable Military Skills that make veterans desirable employees in the private sector, including: leadership; self-sufficiency; teamwork; ability to perform under pressure; and problem-solving.

According to the Pew Research Center, there are approximately 18 million veterans in the U.S. today, representing about 6% of the adult population.

Roughly 200,000 military members retire or separate from the armed services every year, according to the Department of Labor.

A recent survey of 1,000 U.S. military veterans conducted by OnePoll on behalf of the VFW found that finding a job topped the list of challenges, with 33 percent of respondents calling it their biggest hurdle.

According to a poll from Employ Inc., 81% of hiring professionals are having trouble filling jobs.
