SPORTS REPORT

We’re still a few days away from Week 5 of the high school football season kicking off, so let’s turn our sights on the courses and shine a light on some Lowco cross country and golf stars.

The first big cross country race in the area this season went off Saturday in Hardeeville with Bluffton High School hosting the inaugural Pink House Invitational, named in honor of longtime coach Dana House, who will retire after this season.

And the Bobcats put on a great showing, with the girls and boys both finishing third and homecoming king Earlon Baker blazing to a runner-up finish.

Baker was nine seconds away from claiming his second crown in about 12 hours, running 15:41 to finish just behind Joseph Wright from Philip Simmons after being crowned king of The Den at Friday’s football game.

That helped the Bobcats place third behind Class 5A squads Wando and James Island, while Hilton Head was fifth and May River was sixth — and the three Beaufort County rivals were separated by only six points. May River’s Jackson Wright was third and Hilton Head’s JD Gilman was fourth, both sliding in under the 16-minute mark.

Philip Simmons ran away with the girls title, but Bluffton was in third, right on Wando’s heels. Hilton Head’s Julia McKenna had the best Lowco finish in the girls race, placing eighth in 19:10, but the Bobcats showed off their depth with five runners in the top 21 finishers, led by freshman Giada Carge in 11th.

The May River girls golf team claimed another prestigious title over the weekend, taking the top spot at the Style Driver Tournament of Champions at True Blue Golf Course in Myrtle Beach. The Sharks posted a two-day total of 625 and had the lowest team total each round to edge Class 5A power Dorman by 12 shots. Claire Green led the way with a fifth-place finish, while Robbin Zetrouer placed 10th, Hailey Aipperspach was 12th, and Ava Cunningham finishing 19th in another display of depth.
