Wrapping up last week’s reporting on May River alum and Clemson Tiger Andrew Swanson playing in the prestigious North & South Amateur up in Pinehurst, North Carolina … when we left you on Friday, Swanson had just survived a 23-hole marathon to advance to the quarterfinals of the 32-player bracket, but he ran out of gas in his second match of the day, falling 2 and 1 to top-seeded Jackson Van Paris.
Checking in on some Lowco Diamond Dudes playing collegiate summer ball, we saw Beaufort High alum Rhogue Wallace showing off some opposite field power this weekend for the Boone Bigfoots of the Coastal Plains League. Wallace’s two-run shot helped the Bigfoots to a 7-6 win and Big Red is now hitting .325 with four doubles and two homers in 47 plate appearances.
A little further from home, former May River Shark turned Coastal Carolina Chanticleer Darin Horn is turning heads pitching for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks in the Cape Cod League. Last week, Horn recorded the five highest spin rates in the league with five sliders that registered more than 3200 rpms and topped out at 3369. For reference, the highest average spin rate on sliders in the majors this season is 2855. We see you, Bugs.
Speaking of big league pitchers, Hilton Head High alum Carmen Mlodzinski is giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a much needed boost out of the bullpen. Mlodzinski has recorded four straight scoreless outings - including his first MLB win in the Bucs’ walkoff against Milwaukee on Friday - and now has a 2.89 ERA in 9.1 innings to begin his big league career. Keep it up, Carmen. The Lowco is proud.
