The Class 4A soccer playoffs rolled on last night, and May River’s girls joined the boys in the Lower State semifinals, as Brooke Dalton and Zoe Stevenson found the back of the net and Lexie Lagan kept a clean sheet in goal to power the Sharks to a 2-0 win at West Florence. May River travels to James Island for a third meeting with the Trojans on Saturday.
But it was the end of the road for the Hilton Head Seahawks, who ran into a buzzsaw at A.C. Flora and were blanked 5-0. Terrific first season under coach Kyle Newcomb.
Beaufort High’s girls saw their state title hopes dashed in a penalty shootout against Gilbert, as the Eagles misfired on their first chance and the Indians buried all five of their penalties to advance. Brutal end to a sensational season.
But it wasn’t a bad night for Beaufort in the end, because the baseball team pulled off an upset on the road, rallying for six runs in the final two innings for a 6-3 win at Gilbert. Gunner Hollingsworth went the distance on the mound and Malcolm Webb led a 10-hit attack for the resurgent Eagles, who are one win from advancing to Lower State.
The softball teams from May River and Colleton County stayed alive, as Ana Caraballo tossed a shutout and added two hits in a 7-0 win over Westside, and the Cougars ousted Northwestern 5-1. Both face another elimination game Saturday.
The SCISA soccer playoffs start next week, and Holy Trinity’s girls will be the favorite in Class 2A after finishing an undefeated regular season with a 1-0 win over Beaufort Academy. Might see that matchup again in the finals.
